Be an overcomer

We all have things happen to us in life. Some are wonderful. Some aren’t. It’s how we respond to adversity that makes all the difference.

We can succumb…or we can overcome.

Most of what happens in our daily life is probably fairly benign.  It’s when the big things, the unexpected, the often unwanted things happen that test us and help us remember that we can respond or react. The choice is ours. Often, a fair amount of grace is required to help us not succumb, to support us to overcome the adversity and carry on hopefully stronger and even better than before. Even if at first we don’t realize it.

I think Mandisa captures the essence of this magnificently in her song and her video, Overcomer.

Maybe you’ve heard her song before, but if you’ve never watched the video that accompanies it, then you’re missing out. I am posting it right here below.

And here is my challenge to you:

Listen to the song and watch the video. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to do this so you can see what I mean. It’s something you will feel in your body as the music and images play out. Please watch it to the end, and then post your thoughts in the comment section below.

Dance Party

Something unusual happened today: I have my empty house to myself! The planets must have aligned! This is as rare and as exciting to me at 53 as it was when I was 16.

As a matter of fact, the first time I was ever allowed to stay home alone in my house was when I was 16. I think my parents went out for an hour or two. I was giddy. I didn’t know what to do first. What I did end up doing was dancing on the coffee table.

Dancing. On. The. Coffee. Table.

Sadly, I can’t remember what the song was.

Anyway, to celebrate my good fortune, and to honor my 16 year old self, I decided to dance on my coffee table today, too (definitely a challenge-my present day coffee table is so much smaller than the coffee table of yore).

What song would YOU choose for your own 5 minute dance party?

Angel signs

archangel michael doreen virtueI have been working on an idea for a business this year. It’s had some pretty good momentum and has been chugging along nicely. Until yesterday. Yesterday, I hit a speed bump. A large speed bump.

I have been very optimistic and have had a million ideas in support of my project, but then the speed bump knocked me flat. I felt like I should just stop right now, pick up all my toys, and go home.

I was sitting in my car (as I so often am) at the ocean, feeling pretty down. Then I remembered something that I was listening to or reading recently that said to ask Archangel Michael for help when you are stuck.

I asked.

Right then, as in, right that minute, the song on the radio changed. The new song that came on was somehow louder than the one that had been playing just prior. The new song was Mandisa singing “Overcomer”.

Do you know this song? Here are some of the lyrics:

You might be down for a moment, feeling kind of hopeless, that’s when He reminds  you, YOU’RE AN OVERCOMER!  Stay in the fight till the final round…take a breath…don’t forget…don’t quit…don’t give in…

And then I teared up. Big emotion that appeared out of nowhere, rising up from my core, and spilling over in tears. This is my fail-safe signal that I am receiving true guidance that is important, and to which I should listen.

The significance of the station, KLove  was also not lost on me, either (K for Karen!)’

Okay, I am not quitting. I am taking a breath.
