My first book: Updated April 2012
April 14, 2012: Sad but true: my book is still not ready for prime time. My husband (remember him? the one I did not slap back in December?) said: “You have to start over and write in the third person point of view.”
Really? Really?
So I did. I’m giving it six months.
December 30, 2011: I have come to the sad realization, after weeks of trying to cut and paste my edits and revisions, that it’s just not possible to do it this way. I shared this insight with my husband yesterday, who replied, “No kidding.” No, I did not slap him. He was out of reach at the time.
So I will begin my fourth and final (one can only hope) re-write of Why Buy the Cow tomorrow. Wish me luck.
NOVEMBER 18, 2011: My husband, who is my first, best (and thus far only) reader, read through the rough draft last night and had this advice to offer: “It needs to be reworked.” Fine. I knew this. I will do it. I have a plan (actually, we brainstormed a little and he helped me to organize my thoughts as well as to make a plan to reorder some of the chapters (and condense others) and I’m recommitted to getting it finished this year.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2011: The uncorrected proof of my book is, alas, still mostly uncorrected. I had to shelve it for a bit while I undertook another (work) project but now that transition is mostly complete, it’s time to finish the proof. I have set a deadline that I will finish proofing it by October 31, since the next NaNoWriMo begins November 1st and I just may be participating again this year. It doesn’t make sense to do so though if I haven’t finished the work from the prior year, though, right?
JULY 6, 2011: My proof copy of my book arrived in the mail today! I saw the package lying on the kitchen island with the other mail when I returned home from work.
BEFORE: I’ve just finished my novel, entitled Why Buy the Cow? A Young Woman’s Journey Through Men to Marriage. I am working on the editing of my manuscript and am lucky enough to have the love and support of my family and friends every step of the way.
2/14/11: Here’s the pitch (second draft):
Why Buy the Cow? A Young Woman’s Journey Through Men to Marriage is the Animal Husbandry for the 21st Century.
“I’ve been dating since I was fifteen. I’m exhausted. Where is he?”
~Kristin Davis
Kathryn meets her soul mate, whom she is certain will someday be her husband, when they are both fifteen. Their relationship starts slowly, then builds…then stalls. Her disappointment with the way things are turning out leads to: The Downward Spiral. The Crash. The Burn. She rises, then heads right back into the fray. Determined not to make the same mistakes, she doesn’t. She makes different ones. Determined to find a husband before she is twenty-seven, she rushes headlong into the tricks and treats of dating armed only with her persistent, blinding naiveté. Will it be enough?
3/31/11: Update
I’m on page 106 of about 314 with my edits. Starting to feel like I might actually finish it soon!
5/22/11: Update
I’m on page 242 of about 313 now with my edits. Plan: finish by end of this month.
5/24/11: Update
Edits finished! Husband is now proof-reading the manuscript.
6/30/11: Update
So, due to all of the work involved in setting up the home office, my proof-reader has had to take a short LOA. Since my coupon to get a free proof copy of my book expired today, I decided to just move forward with what I had thus far, typos and all. It took much longer than I expected it to, so I just got my manuscript in under the wire today! I am now awaiting my proof copy of my book, which is due to arrive July 11th! YAY!!!
